About this speaker
Having grown up in India I have first hand experience of water scarcity, where water was available to us 1 hour in the morning and 1 hour in the evening, and we had to get our "business" done.
This crucible led me to deep-dive and learn about the business of water. I founded Aruna because I was determined to do "something" about the water problem.
My Master’s thesis at Columbia University gave me the opportunity and to led me to discover a chemical-free advanced oxidation process (AOP) using pulsed light.
Our patented technology achieves photolysis and photodissociation in a chemical-free and environmentally safe manner, and can degrade contaminants such as:
-Agricultural pesticides
-Pharmaceutical residues
-Microbiological contaminants
-Industrial dyes
-1,4-Dioxane, a common groundwater contaminant
-N-Nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA), a potent carcinogen
-Toxic algae blooms
-Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often referred to as "forever chemicals"
-Various other toxic organic compounds
At the core of Aruna's innovation is an advanced oxidation process that harnesses the power of photolysis and photodissociation. These photochemical reactions are induced without the need for chemical additives, setting this technology apart from conventional treatment methods. The process utilizes specific wavelengths of light to break down complex molecular structures, effectively degrading a wide range of persistent contaminants.
The technology can degrade these pollutants in a fraction of the time required by conventional advanced oxidation processes. This rapid treatment capability could potentially revolutionize water treatment plants' operations, allowing for higher throughput and improved water quality.
Furthermore, Aruna's technology boasts impressive energy efficiency. It consumes up to 70% less energy compared to existing advanced oxidation technologies. This significant reduction in energy consumption not only translates to lower operational costs for water treatment facilities but also aligns with global efforts to reduce carbon footprints and combat climate change.
The combination of chemical-free operation, broad-spectrum contaminant removal, rapid treatment times, and energy efficiency positions Aruna's technology as a potential game-changer in the water treatment industry.
